How Hanta Hub sources, verifies, and updates its tracker on the 2026 MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak — the source hierarchy, the daily refresh cycle, case-definition rules, conflict-of-data resolution, and corrections policy.
When two primary sources disagree on a figure, we resolve in the following order:
| Classification | Our definition (matches WHO DON601) |
|---|---|
| Confirmed | PCR-confirmed Andes virus by a national reference laboratory or equivalent. Used in our headline confirmed-count. |
| Probable | Compatible clinical syndrome + close-contact epidemiological link + IgM positive or other supportive serology, without a confirmatory PCR. |
| Inconclusive | Initial positive PCR or serology that has not been corroborated on follow-up testing. Held in this category pending repeat testing. |
| Suspected (excluded) | Compatible syndrome alone, no laboratory or epidemiological corroboration. We do not include suspected-only cases in our headline counts. |
Deaths follow the same hierarchy: a death is "confirmed" if the underlying case was PCR-confirmed, and "probable" if the case was probable. We report both in disaggregated form in the open data feed at /data/cases.json.
The site refreshes through three mechanisms:
The tracker focuses on (a) the 2026 MV Hondius cluster — currently the only active multi-country hantavirus outbreak — and (b) endemic baseline data for the regions where hantavirus circulates: Argentina and Chile (Andes virus), the southwestern United States (Sin Nombre virus), Northern Europe (Puumala/Dobrava), and East Asia (Hantaan/Seoul). We do not duplicate the surveillance work of national systems for endemic cases; we link to those sources instead.
Hanta Hub includes Amazon-affiliate links to a small set of recommended preparedness products (N95 respirators, nitrile gloves, EPA-approved disinfectant, pulse oximeters, etc.). These products are selected on the basis of CDC, NIOSH, and WHO guidance for hantavirus cleanup, not on commercial criteria. We earn a small commission on qualifying purchases through these links; this commission does not influence editorial decisions or the case-count figures.
We correct errors of fact as quickly as we can verify them. If you spot one, email press@hantavirussupplies.com with the page URL and the source supporting your correction. Substantive corrections are flagged in the next blog post; minor corrections (typos, link errors) are made silently.
Hanta Hub is an independent project run by Michael Jacobs. It is not affiliated with any health authority, news outlet, or pharmaceutical company, and no compensation or material benefit is received from any of the sources cited. The site's only revenue is Amazon-affiliate commission on the preparedness products listed in the Hub section.
